How GPA and CGPA are calculated
GPA (grade point average) is the average of the grade points you earned in one semester, weighted by credit hours. CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the same average taken over all semesters so far.
For each course, multiply its grade points by its credit hours. Add these quality points for all courses, then divide by the total credit hours:
GPA = (sum of grade points × credit hours) ÷ (sum of credit hours)
Example
Three courses: 3 credit hours with grade A (4.0), 3 credit hours with grade B (3.0), and 2 credit hours with grade A- (3.67). Quality points are 12 + 9 + 7.34 = 28.34, and the credit hours add up to 8. The GPA is 28.34 ÷ 8 = 3.54.
Grade scales
Most Pakistani universities use a 4.0 scale, but the points for each letter can differ. The tool offers the common scale with plus and minus grades and a simple scale without them. If your university publishes a different table, use the grade points from your own transcript.
- Repeated courses. Universities treat these in different ways; some replace the old grade, some average both. Follow your own rules.
- Percentage. There is no single official formula to turn CGPA into percentage. The rough figure shown here is only a guide; ask your university for an equivalence certificate when a job needs one.
- Job requirements. Many advertisements ask for a minimum division or CGPA. Check how the advertisement defines it.
