How the typing test works
Three steps, no sign-up. Your speed is counted in words per minute (WPM), where one word is five characters. Only correct characters count, and accuracy is the share of your key presses that were right.
- 1Choose a length
Pick 1, 2 or 5 minutes. Longer tests give a steadier, more honest speed.
- 2Click and type
Click the text box and type the passage exactly as shown. The timer starts with your first key.
- 3See your level
Letters turn dark when right and red when wrong. At the end you get your WPM, accuracy and level.
What speed do jobs ask for?
The required speed depends on the post and is stated in the advertisement. Junior clerk and data entry posts commonly test around 25 to 35 words per minute in English, while stenotypist and some computer operator posts ask for more. Always read the latest advertisement and practise for the figure it gives.
Tips to type faster
Every mistake costs more time than slow, steady typing. Speed comes by itself once the fingers know the keys.
Keep your eyes on the text and learn the home row: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right.
Back straight, elbows near the body, wrists level and relaxed.
Ten to fifteen minutes every day beats one long session a week.
Look at the next word while your fingers type the current one.
