MCQ Test Strategy: Time Management, Negative Marking and Smart Guessing

27 Sep 2026 Updated 09 Oct 2026 3 min read 0 reads 0 likes

Two candidates with the same knowledge can score very differently in an MCQ test. The difference is strategy: how they use time, how they handle questions they do not know, and how they avoid careless mistakes. This guide gives a practical approach you can practise at home.

Know the paper before you sit

  • How many questions, how much time, and how many marks per question?
  • Is there negative marking, and how much is deducted for a wrong answer?
  • Are sections timed separately, or can you move freely?

Find the answers in the roll number slip, the advertisement or previous papers of the same body.

Time management

Divide the total minutes by the number of questions. For example, 100 questions in 90 minutes gives 54 seconds per question. Plan three passes:

  1. Pass 1 (about 60% of the time): answer every question you can do quickly. Skip a question if you cannot start within 20 seconds, and mark it.
  2. Pass 2 (about 30%): return to the marked questions and use elimination.
  3. Pass 3 (last 10%): check the OMR sheet: right bubble, right row, no double marks.

Negative marking: to guess or not?

Suppose a wrong answer loses one quarter of the marks and each question has four options. If you can remove one wrong option, the chance of being right rises to one in three, and a guess is worth taking on average. If you cannot remove any, a guess has a poor expected value, so leave it. Always follow the rule of the actual paper; if there is no negative marking, answer every question.

Elimination technique

  • Remove options that contradict each other or the question.
  • Be careful of extreme words such as "always", "never", "only" in options; they are often wrong.
  • In number questions, test the options or estimate: some options are far from the range.
  • When two options are almost the same, one of them is often the answer.

Read the question properly

Words like EXCEPT, NOT, LEAST, FIRST change what is asked. Underline them in the question book. Many candidates choose the "most correct" answer for a question that asks for the "incorrect" one.

Marking the OMR sheet

  • Use a black or blue ball point/gel pen, as instructed. Never use a pencil if it is prohibited.
  • Fill the circle fully and neatly. Do not tick or cross it.
  • Mark answers after every page, or after every 10 questions, but not at the very end; running out of time is a common mistake.
  • If you change an answer, follow the rules of erasing in the instructions; overwriting may make it invalid.

How to practise strategy

  1. Solve full-length mock papers with a real timer, once a week.
  2. After each paper, write how many questions you skipped, guessed and got wrong.
  3. Find the cause of each loss: knowledge, speed or carelessness. Fix the biggest one first.

On Jobs Bazaar the timed mock exams give you a score after submission, and your member dashboard shows weak topics so you can focus your practice.

On the test day

Sleep well, eat lightly, reach the centre early and carry only the allowed items. Stay calm if the first few questions are hard. Every candidate faces the same paper.
